New Delhi: An assassination attempt was made on former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Farooq Abdullah at a wedding party. His son and current CM of Jammu and Kashmir, Omar Abdullah has now questioned the lapse of security, which led to the assassination attempt.
The attack took place inside a wedding venue at Greater Kailash area of Jammu on March 2026. The attacker reportedly reached Farooq Abdullah as he was preparing to exit the venue and tried to fire at him from point blank range. Fortunately however, the bullet missed the National Conference chief and his security guards and others present at the venue overpowered the shooter.
‘How did attacker reach so close?’: Omar Abdullah
Jammu and Kashmir CM Omar Abdullah questioned the lapse of security by the National Security Guard (NSG) commandos. He said that his father was protected by the NSG and had been provided Z+ security, then how did the attacker manage to reach so close to him.
Omar also said that this was a clear assassination attempt on the former CM of Jammu and Kashmir.
Taking to social media platform, ‘X’, Omar Abdullah wrote, “Allah is kind. My father had a very close shave. The details are sketchy at the moment but what is known is that a man with a loaded pistol was able to get within point blank range & discharge a shot. It was only the close protection team that deflected the shot & ensured that the assassination attempt failed. There are more questions than answers at the moment including but not limited to how someone was able to get this close to a Z+ NSG protected former CM.”

No one injured in attack, Farooq Abdullah safe: National Conference
Meanwhile, the CM’s advisor Nasir Aslam Wani confirmed that no one was injured in the attack. Farooq Abdullah is completely safe, he added.
Wani further said that the attacker was arrested from the spot. He has been identified as 63-year-old Kamal Singh Jamwal. He is a resident of Jammu. The advisor however said that drawing any conclusions as of now was not correct. He said that investigations are on in the matter.
Jammu and Kashmir National Conference leader Aizaz Ahmed reacted sharply to the attack, terming it unfortunate. Talking to media persons, he said, “Farooq Abdullah had gone to a wedding. We were also with him. We were all leaving the wedding venue, when somebody came running from behind and put a revolver on Abdullah. The man fired, but it missed Abdullah. This is a very unfortunate incident.”
He demanded that there should have been a check on who is coming inside with what in his possession, given that such high profile political figures were present there. A man with a pistol entered the venue, this is unfortunate, he added.
He confirmed that Farooq Abdullah was completely fine. The attacker has also been arrested and is currently in police custody, said Ahmed.
BJP, Congress condemn attack on Abdullah
Both the opposition parties in Jammu and Kashmir, the BJP and Congress have also condemned the incident.
BJP leader Ravinder Raina called the attack on the NC leader “extremely worrying and very serious.” He was quoted as saying, “A shooting incident has come to light during a late-night wedding ceremony in Jammu city. This is an extremely worrying and very serious matter. Dr Farooq Abdullah, the former Chief Minister of J&K, was also present at that wedding ceremony. The J&K Police have arrested the individual who fired the shots, and all security agencies along with the J&K Police are conducting an investigation. The security agencies are thoroughly examining every layer and angle. However, senior officials of the J&K Police believe that no plot of any terrorist incident appears to be involved in this shooting in any way, but still, they are probing all angles… Thank God that all the people who were present at the wedding ceremony, including Farooq Abdullah, are safe.”
The Congress Party’s state president, Tariq Hameed Karra has also criticised the attack on Farooq Abdullah. He also questioned the law and order situation in the region. Taking to social media, Karra said that such incidents of violence are really worrying.
Karra added that one cannot ignore the rising crimes and lawlessness in the region. He also asked for answers from the state’s administration and police force, who are responsible for maintaining the law and order in the Union Territory.
