IAMI (AP) – A’ja Wilson, a four-time WNBA MVP and star of the Las Vegas Aces, remained on the edge of her seat during a recent game, anxious not to disrupt the momentum of her boyfriend, Bam Adebayo.
Adebayo, playing for the Miami Heat, delivered a historic performance, scoring 83 points in a 150-129 victory over the Washington Wizards.
Despite her initial nerves, Wilson eventually settled along the baseline, witnessing Adebayo’s remarkable achievement, which now ranks as the second-highest single-game score in NBA history.
A Historic Night for Adebayo
Adebayo’s scoring feat places him among the elite in NBA history, trailing only Wilt Chamberlain’s record of 100 points. This performance also makes Adebayo the active player with the highest single-game score, surpassing Wilson’s WNBA career high of 53 points, which is tied for the all-time league record.
Wilson’s Support and Adebayo’s Milestones
Wilson expressed her initial apprehension during the game, stating, “I was hiding a little bit. I don’t know. I just got nervous.” However, Adebayo remained unfazed and delivered one of the best games of his career.
Before this game, Adebayo reached a career milestone by scoring his 10,001st point, a moment Wilson wished to share with him, but she was not in attendance for that game. Adebayo reflected on this, saying, “She wanted me to wait. To have 83, the first game she’s here, is very special.”
Adebayo’s Record-Setting Performance
In addition to his 83 points, Adebayo set NBA records with 36 free throws made and 43 attempted. His performance not only solidified his place in NBA history but also helped him escape any repercussions from not having Wilson present during his previous milestone achievement.
“He’s forgiven,” Wilson remarked, highlighting the light-hearted nature of their relationship despite the earlier disappointment.
