This is the story of Goddess Sheetala (Story of Sheetala Mata)
According to the popular story, once upon a time a Brahmin family lived in a village. Apart from the parents, there were two sons and two daughters-in-law in that family. After marriage, both the daughters-in-law of the Brahmin did not have children for a long time. Then someone advised him to observe a fast on Shitala Saptami. Due to the auspicious effect of this fast, both the daughters-in-law soon became mothers.

Next time when the time came for Sheetala Puja, both the daughters-in-law, keeping in mind the health of the children, ate hot food secretly. After this, when both the daughters-in-law went to pick up their children, they saw that both the children were dead. When the mother-in-law asked them, both the daughters-in-law told her the whole truth. Mother-in-law immediately understood the whole thing.
– The mother-in-law threw both her daughters-in-law out of the house and said, ‘Don’t return home until both the children are alive.’ Both the daughters-in-law kept the children in the basket and left the house. On the way he met two sisters. Both the daughters-in-law removed the yoke from their heads, the sisters were happy and said, ‘You both have cooled our heads, all your wishes will be fulfilled.’
Both the daughters-in-law told them the whole story truthfully. One of those sisters said, ‘You both had hot food on Shitala Saptami, that is why your children are in this condition. The daughters-in-law understood that it was none other than Goddess Sheetala herself. Both the daughters-in-law apologized to mother Shitala. Mother Sheetala became happy and brought her dead sons back to life.
Seeing their sons alive, both the daughters-in-law were very happy and came to the village with their sons and told the whole story to their mother-in-law. When the villagers heard this, they also started worshiping Mata Shitala and also built a temple of Mata Shitala. Since then the tradition of worshiping Sheetala Mata is going on in every house.
