Maharashtrian woman’s ordeal of 3 forced marriages ends with 4 arrests

New Delhi: A 21-year-old woman went through an ordeal of marrying three people and a suicide attempt before proceeding to a fourth marriage. Police have arrested four accused in connection with the case.

The accused earned lakhs in commission, and the incident came into the limelight after the victim allegedly tried to consume poison to kill herself when she was pressured to do her fourth marriage in Kanadi (Budruk) village in Latur district on Friday evening.

Sharad Bhuketkar, Ashti police station inspector, confirmed that officials arrested the four accused, including a woman who arranged the deal with her husband.

The victim has been living with her parents in Latur for the past two years. She was separated from her husband due to alleged harassment by him. Later, she came in touch with a woman, who introduced her to the accused woman, as she had promised the victim to arrange her second marriage.

The accused took the victim to Pune and forcibly married her to a man in the Katraj area, as the accused received Rs 5 lakh as commission, police officials quoted by PTI said.

After 10 days, the victim was again forcibly married to another man from the Kurkumbh area in Pune district. In this marriage, the accused received a fee of Rs 4.5 lakh, but her ordeal didn’t stop there.

The accused took help from another woman from Tuljapur in the Dharashiv district to arrange the third marriage of the victim on March 4 from Kanadi (Badruk) village in the Tehsil. In this marriage also, she collected around Rs 4.5 lakh as commission.

The accused was exploiting the victim as she was preparing for her fourth marriage. They were pressuring the victim for the fourth marriage. The victim was unable to handle the mental trauma, and she consumed poison in an attempt to end her life. She is currently under observation in the hospital, as her condition is said to be critical.
