Sanju Samson is close to creating history in the 2026 T20 World Cup final. He is just 1 run away from completing 1000 runs as a wicketkeeper in T20Is. He will become the second Indian after MS Dhoni to achieve this feat.
Ahmedabad: The final of the 2026 T20 World Cup… New Zealand team in front… and Team India’s star player Sanju Samson is just one run away from creating history. If Sanju scores one run, he will become the second Indian player to complete 1000 runs as a wicketkeeper-batsman in International T20. Before him, only the great MS Dhoni had done this feat.
Dhoni played 98 T20 matches for India and scored 1617 runs as a wicketkeeper. At the same time, Sanju currently has 999 runs in his name as a wicketkeeper in 44 matches. By scoring a run today at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, he will become the first Indian wicketkeeper after Dhoni to cross the 1000-run mark. Although Sanju has scored 1310 runs in 51 innings of 61 T20 matches for India in his career, he has not kept wickets in all the matches.
Behind Sanju in this list are Rishabh Pant (996 runs) and Ishan Kishan (545 runs). By the way, the record of wicketkeeper-batsman scoring the most runs in International T20 is in the name of England’s Jos Buttler. Butler has scored 3592 runs as a wicketkeeper. Sanju has performed amazingly in the last two matches of this World Cup. In the ‘Virtual Quarter Final’ match of Super-8 against West Indies, he won the ‘Player of the Match’ award by scoring unbeaten 97 runs on 50 balls. After this, in the semi-final against England, he played a stormy innings of 89 runs in 42 balls and again became the ‘Player of the Match’.
