State Wise MBBS Seats 2026: NEET UG 2026 result has been released. Meanwhile, there is good news for medical candidates across the country. National Medical Commission (NMC) has released the MBBS seat matrix for the academic session 2026-27. This time a total of 1,36,939 MBBS seats will be available in the country. In the last academic session this number was 1,27,028. That means there has been an increase of about 9,911 new MBBS seats this year. This increase in seats has happened due to approval of new medical colleges and increase in admission capacity of already running colleges.
What were the reasons for increase in MBBS seats?
According to NMC, the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) has approved the establishment of several new MBBS colleges and increase in seats in existing medical colleges. Due to this, the capacity of medical education across the country has become greater than before. Its direct benefit will be to lakhs of students who dream of getting admission in MBBS through NEET UG every year.

Maximum MBBS seats in these states
According to the released seat matrix, the highest number of MBBS seats are in Karnataka, where a total of 15,395 seats will be available. This is followed by Uttar Pradesh (14,000), Tamil Nadu (13,999), Maharashtra (13,099) and Telangana (10,250). These five states have emerged as the biggest centers of medical education in the country. Whereas 7,750 MBBS seats will be available in Gujarat, 7,465 in Andhra Pradesh, 7,200 in West Bengal, 6,020 in Madhya Pradesh and 5,704 MBBS seats will be available in Kerala. NMC instructions for private medical colleges
NMC has clarified that private medical colleges which have got approval to open a new college or increase seats will have to submit electronic bank guarantee (E-Bank Guarantee) within seven days. Only after this the Letter of Permission (LoP) will be issued by the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB). The concerned colleges will also have to share the information about bank guarantee through email.

What does this mean for NEET UG candidates?
This time, NEET UG candidates will get the biggest benefit from the increase in MBBS seats. With the increase in seats, the chances of admission in both government and private medical colleges can be better than before. However, the final admission will be based on NEET UG rank, counseling process, reservation rules and seat allotment.
