1, 2, 3 and… How many times should one circumambulate the deities in the temples?

In Indian culture, circumambulation is done in temples and the tombs of ancestors. Many times people get confused as to whether they should do 1, 2, 3 or how many parikramas. Generally people like to do three parikramas. However, religious texts mention that completing a certain number of parikramas to please certain deities leads to fruitful results. Famous astrologer Dr. Basavaraj Guruji has given this information.

Guruji says that Parikrama means paying homage, remembering God and expressing one’s feelings. Performing three parikrama in temples or mausoleums has special significance from both scientific and religious point of view. Three numbers symbolize the three qualities of this world, Satva, Raja and Tamo. It also symbolizes the three worlds, Matsya, heaven and underworld. While doing Parikrama, we remember the influence of God in these three worlds and pray that He listens to our sufferings and grants us salvation.

He said that while doing parikrama, we seek blessings to keep our three qualities balanced. The balance of Satva Guna, Rajo Guna and Tamo Guna leads to peace of mind and taking right decisions. To overcome the difficulties in life due to anger and passion, a balance of these three qualities is necessary. Parikrama is a symbol of complete surrender in all three forms – kaya (body), vach (speech) and manasa (mind).

The number of parikramas varies for some deities.

For Ganapati (Vinayak): It is said that one complete parikrama is sufficient. Elders say that it is better to do the parikrama slowly, keeping the steps close.

For Shiva: Complete parikrama is not necessary. Half parikrama (circumambulation as per Somasutra) is sufficient.

In the temples of Goddess: Four parikrama should be done. It is a symbol of all four directions.

Sun god: If we circumambulate the same place seven times as a self-salutation, we will receive the complete blessings of the Sun.

circumambulation after making a wish with reverence

Guruji said that three parikramas give auspicious results. Some people make a wish and perform 100 or 11 parikramas. It depends on their personal devotion and satisfaction. Parikrama performed with devotion like Yadbhavam Tadbhavati is fruitful. Actually, there are many types of circumambulation in temples, such as circumambulation of the sanctum sanctorum, circumambulation of the courtyard and circumambulation of the entire temple.
