Green, gray or blue… ‘NaMo Green Rail’ runs on which hydrogen? PM Modi showed the green signal

The country’s first hydrogen train ‘NaMo Green Rail’ will cover a distance of 89 kilometers between Jind and Sonipat.

Hydrogen train has started in the country. PM Modi flagged it off from Jind station in Haryana. The train will cover a distance of 89 kilometers between Jind and Sonipat. This is the first train in the country which will run on hydrogen fuel. Through this electricity is generated and the train operates through it. The biggest difference is that diesel engines emit smoke and cause pollution, but hydrogen engines emit water vapor and do not cause pollution.

This train is part of India’s National Hydrogen Mission, which was announced by the Modi government in February 2022. The government has set a target of producing 50 lakh tonnes of green hydrogen by 2030. To make green hydrogen, water and cheap electricity are required. India has both these resources. Solar energy and sea water can prove helpful in making green hydrogen. Now the question is, how many types of hydrogen fuel are there, which type is used in India’s first hydrogen train, how is it made and what are its benefits.

What is hydrogen fuel?

Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe. It exists in the form of atmosphere and water, but it is not found alone, it is always bound in compounds such as water (H₂O) or hydrocarbons. When it is separated and used as fuel, it is called hydrogen fuel.

The special thing is that when hydrogen burns or is used in a fuel cell, it does not emit carbon dioxide but only water vapor. This is the reason why it is called clean fuel and it does not cause air pollution.

How many types of hydrogen are there?

There are many types of hydrogen, depending on how it is made.

1- Green Hydrogen: It is made by electrolysis of water. Electricity comes from solar or wind energy. Its carbon emissions are almost zero. This is the reason why it is considered the safest.

2- Blue Hydrogen: It is prepared from natural gas. The CO₂ produced during the process of making it is stored.

3- Gray Hydrogen: It is made from natural gas. This reduces emissions and CO₂ is released directly into the atmosphere. It has the highest production in the world.

4- Black Hydrogen: This type of hydrogen is made from coal. This is the most carbon emitting type.

5- Brown Hydrogen: It is prepared from lignite (brown coal). There is a lot of carbon emission in this.

6- Pink Hydrogen: It is made from nuclear energy by electrolysis. There is very little CO₂ emission during its production.

7- Yellow Hydrogen: It is prepared by electrolysis from electricity received from the grid. Emissions depend on the power source.

8- Turquoise Hydrogen: This type of hydrogen is made from methane pyrolysis of natural gas. It forms solid carbon instead of CO₂.

Which hydrogen in the hydrogen train?

Green hydrogen has been used in the country’s first hydrogen train. This train is part of India’s National Hydrogen Mission. In 2023, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav had told in the Rajya Sabha that Indian Railways will run 35 hydrogen trains through the “Hydrogen for Heritage” scheme. The construction of one train will cost Rs 80 crore. It will cost Rs 70 crore to develop ground facilities.
