SSC implements seat fix-float system; here’s what the rule says, how to avail benefits

New Delhi: The Staff Selection Commission has decided to implement a new sliding mechanism with fixed and float options starting from the year 2026. This new system aims to reduce the number of vacant positions and allow candidates to choose positions better suited to their merit and preferences.

This system will be somewhat similar to the counselling system at universities, although the SSC will provide only one additional opportunity to keep the process short and simple. Until now, selected candidates often did not join even after receiving an appointment which resulted many positions remaining vacant. Once the new system is implemented, these vacant positions can be filled by other interested candidates.

What are fixed and float options?

Under the new system, candidates will get two options. If a candidate chooses the fixed option, the position assigned will be considered final. Candidates who choose the float option may have the opportunity to receive a better position in the future based on merit and preference. This gives candidates greater freedom to choose jobs according to their preferences.

How will the sliding mechanism work?

Under this new SSC system, positions will be allocated in the first round. If some positions remain vacant, a sliding round will be conducted. Candidates who choose the float option in this round may have the opportunity to advance to a higher position based on their merit and preferences. After this, the revised final result will be released and the appointment formalities will be completed.

Why is there a need to implement this rule?

Millions of candidates apply for several major SSC exams, such as the Combined Graduate Level (CGL), every year. The total number of applicants sometimes reaches 30 to 50 lakh. Despite this, approximately 20 to 30 per cent of selected candidates do not join the job. This leaves many positions vacant for long periods impacting the recruitment process.

What will be the benefit to the candidates?

The new system will make the recruitment process faster and more transparent. It will also reduce the number of vacant positions. This will provide opportunities to candidates who previously lacked merit but are interested in the job. Overall, this new SSC rule is considered an important step towards making the recruitment process more efficient and providing better opportunities to qualified candidates.
