That disease occurring in childhood in which there is never any pain in the body, slowly leads to death.

If someone gets even a slight injury, there is pain in the body. Be it any disease, bone problem or weakness, pain is felt in these too, but do you know that there is a disease in which one never feels even the slightest pain in the body. Even if a person gets hurt, breaks a bone or even gets burnt, he does not feel pain. This disease is called Congenital Insensitivity to Pain (CIP) in medical language. This is a rare genetic disorder in which a person does not feel pain since birth. No matter how much he is hurt.

Congenital Insensitivity to Pain (CIP) disease is quite dangerous because when there is no pain in the body, any other disease growing inside is also not detected. Because of this, it becomes known only when the patient’s condition worsens significantly. The number of cases of this disease worldwide is very less. One in 10 crore children suffers from this disease.

Why does CIP disease occur?

Professor Dr. LH Ghotekar, Director, Department of Medicine, Lady Hardinge Hospital. It is explained that CIP is a genetic disease which occurs due to genetic mutation. This disease occurs when there is a change in the SCN9A gene present in the parents’ body. In this, the function of sensing pain in the body and giving pain signals to the brain does not work. This disease is diagnosed as an autosomal recessive genetic disorder. That is, the child gets this disease when there is a disturbance in the genes of both the mother and father and due to this the child gets this disease from birth.

How is this disease diagnosed?

The symptoms of this disease are not visible immediately after birth, but as the child grows, the symptoms start appearing. Like a child does not feel pain when he gets hurt. Biting the tongue or lips in children, even if there is an injury, do not pay attention to it. If these symptoms are visible in the child, it means that he may have Congenital Insensitivity to Pain (CIP) disease.

Is this disease curable?

Dr. Ghotekar says that this disease is genetic, so at present there is no cure for it in medical science. There is no medicine or vaccine. This cannot even be controlled. The doctor simply advises the patient to be careful. The worrying thing about this disease is that if there is no pain in the body, no other disease is detected. Disease continues to flourish within. Which can also cause death in many cases. Many patients suffering from this disease die before the age of 25 years.
