Breast cancer is becoming a big concern for women in India. The cases of this cancer are increasing twice as fast in the country. According to a recently published international study, the rate of breast cancer in the country has more than doubled in the last three decades. Young women are also getting breast cancer now. If the cases continue to increase like this, then by 2050 about 45 lakh women in India will get this cancer.
This research has been published in Lancet Oncology. According to the study, per 1 lakh women in India in 1990 breast cancer 13 cases were reported. In 2024, this number has increased to 29.4 cases per 1 lakh women, which means cancer cases have increased more than double.
Cases are increasing among young women also
According to the study, more cases of breast cancer have been found in women above 55 years of age in 2023. About 161 cases per 1 lakh women were recorded in this age group. Research has also shown that cancer cases among women aged 20 to 54 years have increased by about 30 percent since 1990. These figures show that women aged between 20 to 54 years are now being affected by breast cancer at an increasing rate.
Is hunting. Whereas till a few decades ago, cases of breast cancer were seen mostly after the age of 60 years.

Research has also revealed what are the major causes of breast cancer in women. Research has shown that tobacco use like cigarette smoking, increased blood sugar, increase in body fat, bad eating habits like consumption of fast food, excessive consumption of red meat and impaired lifestyle are the major reasons for breast cancer in women. According to Dr. Dinu Alford, an oncologist involved in the research, these cases are increasing concern. In such a situation, it is important to take steps to prevent breast cancer.
