- It is based on lunar calculations. In this the month is divided into Krishna and Shukla Paksha.
- It starts every year from the Pratipada date of Shukla Paksha of Chaitra month.

King Vikramaditya was a very just king. He used to work keeping in mind the interests of his subjects. He freed many states from the tyranny of the Shakas and established his rule.
