Samson vs Archer to Rashid vs Suryakumar: Key battles that could decide India vs England T20 WC semifinal

New Delhi: India will face England in the second semifinal of the T20 World Cup 2026 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Thursday, March 5. New Zealand defeated South Africa in the first semifinal, and the winner of this clash will face them in the final in Ahmedabad on March 8.

India and England had contrasting paths to the semifinal of the tournament. Both sides had met in the T20 World Cup 2022 semifinal, where Buttler and Co. defeated the Men in Blue in Australia. After suffering a 10-wicket loss, Rohit and Co. then made a strong comeback to clinch the 2024 title.

England played across both countries in India and Sri Lanka, and have emphatically made it to the knockouts even when their chances were pretty low after a patchy start in the group-stage.

The Three Lions then dominated the Super 8 stage, beating Sri Lanka, New Zealand and Pakistan. India and England last met in a T20I match in Mumbai last year, when Abhishek Sharma struck the highest-ever individual score for the side. Here are the key matchups that could decide the semifinal clash.

Jofra Archer vs Sanju Samson

The battle between Sanju Samson and Jofra Archer was one of the key talking points when India last faced England in the five-match T20I series in 2025. He dismissed Samson three times and conceded just 25 runs in 23 balls against the Indian opener.

However, Abhishek Sharma and Tilak Varma scored heavy runs against the England pacer. Abhishek scored 61 runs off 33 balls, and Varma 36 off 16. Archer failed to dismiss both batters in the series.

Samson has changed his plan against the fast bowlers and has been good at backing away while using their pace to score runs behind square in the ongoing T20 World Cup. He will look to do the same against Archer.

Adil Rashid vs Suryakumar Yadav

Adil Rashid has done exceptionally well for England in the T20 World Cup so far. In seven matches, he has picked up 11 wickets and conceded 209 runs from 26.4 overs at an economy rate of 7.83.

Suryakumar has been one of India’s crucial performers with the bat in the ongoing tournament. He has amassed 231 runs in seven matches at an average of 38.50 and a strike rate of 135.88.

Rashid’s four overs could decide the result of the semifinal. Suryakumar often relies on sweep and slog-sweep against the spinners, but Rashid varies his speed and uses different variations to trap the batters.

Arshdeep Singh vs Phil Salt

With Jos Buttler struggling to score runs, India have a good match-up at the top. Arshdeep has delivered 44 balls to opener Phil Salt and conceded 50 runs, dismissing him four times. But in their last battle, Salt scored 12 runs off six balls from Arshdeep as Royal Challengers Bengaluru defeated Punjab Kings in the IPL final. His short ball has troubled Salt, resulting in four dismissals in 18 balls.
