Man United defender Maguire handed suspended prison sentence for 2020 Greece brawl

England and Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has recieved 15-month suspended prison sentence by a Greek court over a 2020 ‌incident on the island of Mykonos.

The news comes six years after Maguire was found guilty of bodily harm, attempted bribery and violence against public employees after his arrest in a brawl in which two policemen were reportedly assaulted.

Maguire was held for two days following the incident and denied any wrongdoing. He was handed a suspended prison sentence of 21 months and 10 days, but following an against Greek court convictions on multiple charges, was was granted a full retrial.

The Greek judicial process allowed a full retrial in a more senior court after the filing ‌nullified the footballer’s conviction.

His retrial was postponed several times.

The former England captain faced allegations of non-serious assault, resisting arrest, and attempted bribery and was convicted on all three counts, but will face no prison time.

Maguire’s team to challenge the verdict

Maguire’s legal team will appeal against the guilty verdict.

Maguire’s brother Joe and friend Christopher Sharman were also found guilty by the Greek court and received suspended prison sentences in 2020. Like Maguire, both denied any wrongdoing.

Despite several opportunities to settle the case out of court, Maguire is determined to clear his name legally.

The retrial was postponed several times due to a number of procedural issues, including lawyer strikes and scheduling problems.

On the pitch, Maguire was unable to inspire his team in a Premier League fixture against 10-man Newcastle United. The Red Devils suffered their first loss under caretaker manager Michael Carrick as substitute William Osula scored an injury-time winner for the home side.

Osula struck late when it looked like both sides were going to have to settle for a share of the spoils after Casemiro’s header cancelled out Anthony Gordon’s penalty in the stoppage time of the first half. Despite the 1-2 loss, United remained third in the table while Newcastle climbed to 12th.
