Bayer Leverkusen earned a narrow 1-0 victory over Hamburg at Volksparkstadion, tightening the race for Champions League spots. Christian Kofane scored the decisive goal, and the result moved Kasper Hjulmand’s team to within three points of fourth-placed Stuttgart in the Bundesliga table.
Leverkusen also used this game in hand to end a three-match winless spell in all competitions. Hamburg stayed competitive until the final whistle, but late pressure, including a dramatic chance in the eighth minute of stoppage time, failed to rescue a point for the hosts.
The visitors created more clear chances across the 90 minutes, reflected in the expected goals figures. Leverkusen generated 1.93 xG from 14 attempts, compared with Hamburg’s 1.27 xG from 10 shots, in a contest that often swung quickly from one end to the other.
With Patrik Schick unavailable because of injury, and Mailk Tillman only just back in the squad, other attackers had extra responsibility. Kofane responded with a standout display, recording a team-high four shots, nine touches inside the penalty area, and winning eight duels for Leverkusen.
Ibrahim Maza also influenced the match as a creative presence between the lines. Maza produced a game-best four key passes and supplied the assist for the winner, slipping Kofane into the area on 73 minutes, before Kofane drove a fierce strike inside the near post.
Earlier, Leverkusen threatened through Montrell Culbreath, who shot wide, and Martin Terrier, whose effort struck the frame on 12 minutes. After half-time, Edmond Tapsoba twice went close, heading at Daniel Heuer Fernandes and later having a finish disallowed for handball, while Hamburg’s best late chance saw Luka Vuskovic hit the bar from a rebound.
Hamburg’s late surge, highlighted by Vuskovic’s double chance deep into stoppage time, underlined how tight the contest remained. However, Leverkusen controlled key moments at both ends and converted superior underlying numbers into three important points in the chase for the Bundesliga top four.
