Once, in a conspiracy, the son killed his own father by poisoning him and cremated him. After this he forcibly snatched away all the money from his mother also. When news of his misdeeds spread throughout the kingdom, people demanded justice from the king.

The king called the merchant’s son to his court and ordered him to be given death penalty if he was found guilty during the investigation. After receiving orders, the soldiers crucified him. Coincidentally, the day he died was Varada Chaturthi of Ashadha Shukla Paksha.

He neither got food nor water the whole day. In this way he unknowingly went on a waterless fast. According to the scriptures, by the virtue of that fast and the grace of Lord Ganesha, all his sins were destroyed. After death he had the darshan of Lord Ganesha and finally attained supreme power.
