New Delhi: Wolverhampton Wanderers stunned Liverpool 2-1 in the Premier League at the Molineux Stadium on Tuesday, March 3. Mohammed Salah ended his 10-game goal-scoring drought, but the defending champions suffered an embarrassing loss and a big blow to their Champions League qualification hopes.
Liverpool now have 48 points from 29 matches and are placed fifth in the Premier League table, while Wolves’ recent surge has seen them move to 16 points from 30 games. If Chelsea manage to beat Aston Villa on Wednesday, then champions Liverpool will drop to sixth after the ninth defeat in the ongoing season.
The Reds have not lost 10 league games in a season for a decade. After the goalless first half, the dull match came to life in the final 15 minutes. Wolves scored the opening goal in the 78th minute when a quick break provided an opportunity for Rodrigo Gomes, who struck past keeper Alisson.
Liverpool scored the equaliser in the 83rd minute when Bellegarde gifted possession to Salah, who beat Sa to score the goal. The Reds looked more likely to emerge victorious entering the stoppage time, but were stunned when Andre’s long-range shot took a massive deflection off substitute Joe Gomez and wrong-footed goalkeeper Alisson.
Atletico Madrid reach Copa del Rey final
Atletico Madrid qualified for the Copa del Rey final for the first time since 2013 despite a 3-0 loss against Barcelona on Tuesday, their 4-0 first-leg victory at home sealing a 4-3 aggregate semi-final victory.
Barcelona dominated the game from the start, knowing that they needed to score four goals to force extra time. Marc Bernal started in place of the injured Frenkie De Jong and scored the opening goal in the 30th minute from Lamine Yamal’s low cross.
Raphinha netted the second from a spot kick in first-half added time after Pedri was fouled in the box, and Bernal scored the third goal from Joao Cancelo’s delivery in the 72nd minute, but Barca failed to score the fourth to put more pressure on Atletico Madrid. They will face either Real Sociedad or Athletic Bilbao in the Copa del Rey final in Seville on April 19.
