Who are the Iranian Kurds and where do they live?

Kurds are a large ethnic community, whose population is estimated to be around 25 to 30 million. They are spread across Türkiye, Iraq, Iran, Syria and parts of Armenia. They have no independent country of their own. Kurds living in Iran are mostly settled in the western and northwestern areas, especially near the Iraq border. In Iraq they have enjoyed some degree of autonomy, but the situation is different in Iran.
