CHENNAI: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rainfall warning for eleven districts across Tamil Nadu for today, as the state continues to experience widespread monsoon showers. The districts of Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Theni, Dindigul, Madurai, Sivagangai, Kallakurichi, Villupuram, Tiruvannamalai, Chengalpattu, and Kanchipuram have been specifically highlighted for potential heavy to very heavy rainfall at one or two places. This sustained rainfall has led to a significant drop in temperatures, bringing a welcome cool respite to the region.
The weather system is also expected to bring strong surface winds, with speeds of 30 to 40 kmph, accompanied by thunder and lightning. The widespread rains over the past few days have particularly drenched the coastal and interior districts of North Tamil Nadu, as well as several southern parts of the state. The Met department has forecast that this pattern of light to moderate rain in many places will continue across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal for the next 48 hours.
Extended Wet Spell Forecast, Chennai to See Moderate Showers
The wet spell is expected to persist beyond the immediate alert, with the Meteorological Department predicting light to moderate rainfall at isolated places across the state from September 11th to 14th. For tomorrow, the heavy rainfall alert expands to include even more districts. Vellore, Ranipet, Cuddalore, Ariyalur, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, and Pudukkottai are now on the list alongside several districts already under alert today.
Regarding temperatures, the IMD has indicated that there will be no major change in the maximum daytime temperatures across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal until tomorrow, though a slight decrease is possible in a few areas.
