New Delhi: In a shocking incident reported from Uttar Pradesh’s Bahraich, a 30-year-old man allegedly hacked his parents, elder sister and grandmother to death with an axe.
Police said he also allegedly assaulted and injured his elder brother before striking himself on the head with a brick to make the incident look like a violent clash, The Indian Express reported.
Why did he attack them?
The man was enraged as he was reportedly denied his share in a property sold recently. As per the cops, the clash took place after a heated exchange erupted in the intervening night of Sunday and Monday at the family home in Rupaideeh area.
The dead have been identified as the man’s father Badlu Ram (60), mother Sanju Devi (56), sister Parvati (42), and grandmother Sitala (80). Parvati, who was married, had come to meet her parents’ home just two days before the incident took place.
The accused, Nirankar Verma (30), and his elder brother, Gurudev Verma (36), are being treated at a local hospital. The doctors have said that the two are in a stable condition.
Additional Superintendent of Police, Bahraich, Durga Prasad Tiwari, was quoted as saying that a preliminary probe suggested that the incident took place after a dispute erupted when the accused got angry over not being given a share of the money.
Police said they were informed about the incident early Monday morning. They swung into action and reached the site, where six people were found lying on the ground with injury marks. The injured were rushed to a nearby hospital, where four of them succumbed.
How did it happen?
They questioned Gurudev to get the details. Gurudev told the cops that he heard noises late in the night. He reached the spot to check, and saw Nirankar arguing over money from land and jewellery sold by their father.
Nirankar flew into rage and took up an axe and charged at his parents, grandmother and sister, Gurudev said. The accused hit him on the head, he added.
After Gurudev cried for help, neighbours came to his rescue. In the commotion, Nirankar allegedly hit himself on the head several times with a brick.
What police said
Gurudev’s son, Azad, was also there in the house when the incident unfolded, police said.
They are recording statements of relatives and local residents to find out the family’s background and circumstances that resulted in the killings.
Even though Nirankar is married, the couple have been living separately for the past few years due to a marital dispute, police said.
A preliminary probe indicated to a dispute over money as the trigger behind the crime, police said. But all other possible angles are also being investigated to determine if there was any other motive.
