Timely intestinal examination and treatment is the most accurate attack on colorectal cancer: Dr. Karthik Sahni.

The month of March brings Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month across the world. On this occasion, Dr. Karthik Sahni, cancer specialist of Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute, has appealed to the people to be aware about cancer of the large intestine and rectum (colorectal cancer) and get regular screening done.

Dr. Sahni said that Colorectal cancer Is like a silent killer. Symptoms are very common in the initial stage, so people often ignore it, but if the diagnosis is made in time, then successful treatment of this disease is possible.

Cases are increasing even at young age

According to Dr. Sahni, earlier this disease was seen more in people above 50 years of age, but now patients below 40 years of age are also being seen. Irregular eating habits, low fiber diet, processed food, smoking, alcohol and physical inactivity are the main reasons, he said.

Which symptoms should you pay attention to?

  • Change in bowel habits
  • blood in stool
  • persistent stomach pain or bloating
  • unexplained weight loss
  • prolonged fatigue

He advised that if these symptoms persist for more than two weeks, then immediately contact a gastro or cancer specialist.

Many patients have to undergo colostomy

According to experts, if colorectal cancer reaches advanced stage, then first chemotherapy and a part of the large intestine or rectum may have to be removed during surgery.

Dr. Sahni told that in some patients we have to do colostomy, in which a stoma is made on the abdominal wall and the stool is collected outside in a special bag. One has to live with the same bag for a long time, which can be quite uncomfortable and mentally challenging in the beginning.

He further said that the patient has to wear a bag in which the stool is collected. However, with the help of proper guidance, stoma care training and modern medical facilities, patients can lead a normal life.

Screening is the biggest protection

He said that Dr. Sahni recommended regular colonoscopy after the age of 45. People who have a family history of colorectal cancer need to be even more cautious. Screening can remove polyps before they become cancer.

awareness is the only protection

On the occasion of Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, experts have advised a balanced diet, regular exercise, staying away from smoking and excessive alcohol. Dr. Sahni said- This month reminds us that with timely testing and correct information, we can save many lives.
