Periods and Roza in Ramadan 2026: The most sacred and sacred month of Islam is going on, which is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. This month is especially for worship and fasting. During this period, Muslims all over the world keep fast for 29-30 days. Muslims worship Allah by fasting for 12 to 16 hours. In Islam, praying five times a day is a duty on every Muslim. But in this blessed month, a special prayer is performed, which is called Taraweeh. In Ramadan, a Muslim performs five daily prayers, Roza, Taraweeh, Zikr, goodness and every kind of worship. The aim of all these is only one – to please Allah.
Ramadan Fasting is one of the five pillars of Islam and it is obligatory for every adult Muslim to fast. From children to elders, everyone keeps fast throughout the month. But due to women having periods, they are not able to fast for the whole day. Many times there is confusion regarding whether one can fast during menstruation or not. In this article, we will know from Islamic scholar Mufti Salauddin Qasmi what is said in Islam regarding fasting during periods and how to pray during periods in Ramadan.
Should one fast during periods?
One should not fast during periods, as it is prohibited in Islam. The blood coming out of a woman’s body during periods is impure, hence it is not permissible to pray or fast during this period. If you have fasted and your period starts in the middle, then the fast is broken. If a woman who is fasting starts her period at any time before Iftar, her fast will be broken. Then, in place of this missed fast, you will have to observe Qaza fast later.

What to do if you get your period in between fasting?
Suppose you had Sehri and kept fast. Now if the period starts at 9 o’clock, 10 o’clock or even 5 minutes before the start of Iftar time, then the fast will be broken. You will have to remember this fast later. If you fast and get your periods in between, you can eat and drink anything.
What should not be done during periods?
According to the Hadith of Islam, women cannot read the Quran, offer namaz and fast during periods. Apart from this, Zikr, prayers, Istgfar from Allah, exercise of Durood Sharif, Kalma, Tauba and sitting spread out Musalla can do all this. Touching Quran Sharif and reading Quran Sharif is prohibited. However, one can touch the Tasbeeh during her period. Getting your period is natural and it will not reduce your reward in any way.

Important things regarding period during fasting
- Fast is broken:- If hay fever starts while fasting, the fast is broken immediately, even if you have not eaten or drunk anything.
- Before Iftar:- If bleeding occurs even some time before sunset, the fast of that day will not be considered.
- Kaja is necessary:- It is important to observe the missed fasts (Qaza) after Ramadan.
- Ibadat:- Namaz and fasting are exempted during periods. But it is necessary to perform Qaja.
- Food and drink:- You can eat and drink during the day during your period. But one should avoid eating in front of fasting people.
- Will not break due to spotting:- If there is light spotting after fasting during the day or around the time of Iftar, then it is not considered a period and the fast remains valid.
When should one not fast?
Ramadan During Roza one should not observe certain conditions such as illness, travel, pregnancy, breastfeeding, menstruation, old age, and mental illness. In these circumstances, skipping the fast is permitted as per Islamic Shariat. But it is necessary to make up for the missed fasts later (Kaza) or give Fidiya (feeding the poor).

What to do when you are unable to fast?
Qaza:- The missed fasts after Ramzan have to be observed on any day as per one’s convenience.
Fidyah:- If a person cannot keep the fast (e.g. very old or terminally ill), then one poor person has to be fed food in exchange for each missed fast.

- Eid-ul-Azha (Bakrid): Do not fast on this day also.
- Days of Tashreek (11, 12, 13 Zul-Hijja): These days are also prohibited for fasting.
