Sam Altman announces OpenAI reaching agreement with USA

New Delhi: OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has announced that the company has reached an agreement with the United States’ Department of War (DoW) to deploy their artificial intelligence models within classified military networks, outlining safety commitments and operational safeguards in a post on ‘X’. In his tweet, he noted that they would be “deploying their models in a classified network”.

Altman said that discussions with defence officials reflected alignment on responsibly using AI.

He noted that through their discussions, the DOW showed respect for safety and a desire to partner to achieve the best possible results. Altman said that safety rules made for the centre of the agreement, particularly regarding military deployments of advanced AI systems.

As per Altman, OpenAI will introduce technical mechanisms to ensure that their models function within agreed boundaries during defence use. He further noted that deployments would occur only through cloud-based infrastructure and would include dedicated personnel overseeing implementation. He urged the defence department to extend similar terms to other AI companies.

Altman concluded that OpenAI hoped tensions between governments and technology firms would move towards negotiated solutions rather than confrontation.
