Story of Surya and Shani: In astrology, Suryadev and Shanidev are considered important planets. Suryadev is considered to be the king of the planets while Shanidev is considered to be the giver of karma and the god of justice. Both of these planets have positive and negative effects on a person’s life. There is a feeling of enmity between Suryadev and Shanidev. These two are father and son, but Suryadev had refused to accept Shanidev as his son. After this Shanidev became absorbed in the devotion of Lord Shiva. According to a story narrated in Kashikhand, Sun God was married to Vishwakarma’s daughter ‘Sandhya’. After some time of marriage, Suryadev and Sandhya had three children named Manu, Yamraj and Yamuna, but Sandhya was afraid of the brightness of Suryadev. To be able to bear the heat of the sun, Sandhya decided to do penance. After this he created his lookalike Samvarna i.e. Chhaya.

Sandhya entrusted Chhaya with the responsibility of taking care of her children and went to her father’s house. When her father did not support Sandhya, she took the form of a mare in the forest and started doing penance. On the other hand, Chhaya started living with Suryadev. According to mythological beliefs, Chaya performed rigorous penance for Lord Shiva while she was in the womb of Shanidev.
This also affected Shani, who was growing in Chaya’s womb, and his complexion turned black. Seeing Shani Dev, Surya Dev doubted Chaya and insulted him and said that this cannot be his son. Also refused to accept him as his son. Seeing his mother being insulted, Shani Dev got angry and looked at his father Suryadev and Suryadev turned completely black.
Lord Shiva gave boon to Shanidev
Ultimately, Suryadev got upset and went to seek refuge in Lord Shiva. Then Lord Shiva told him his mistake, after which Suryadev apologized for his mistake. Then he got his form back. To take revenge from his father, Shani performed severe penance to Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva was pleased and blessed Shanidev that he would be the best among the nine planets and would also be the supreme judge and magistrate.
Lord Shiva told Shanidev that not only human beings, gods, demons, Siddhas, Vidyadhars, Gandharvas and Nagas all would be afraid of his name. Since then, Shani Dev of Shani Dev is the most powerful among the planets and the giver of complete achievements.
