What is Kokedama Technique?
Kokedama plants do not need pots or soil. This is a Japanese method which is becoming increasingly popular. The roots of the plant are wrapped in a ball of soil and moss, which retains moisture for a long time. This technique requires very little water, yet the plants remain healthy. This method is especially beneficial for those living in cities, where space is less and it becomes difficult to water the plants daily. Most importantly, Kokedama is also eco-friendly. It does not require plastic pots, so water is not wasted, and plants grow with minimal resources.
How does Kokedama work?
In kokedama, the roots of the plant are protected inside a round ball of soil. This ball of clay is wrapped in moss or coconut fiber, which retains moisture for a long time. The plant is watered as per requirement by soaking (soaking method), due to which the roots are able to absorb only the required water and not much water comes out.
How to make Kokedama at home?
To make this, first take a small indoor plant from the nursery. Remove all the soil from its roots. Now, take 30 percent potting soil, 30 percent compost and 25 percent coco peat. Mix all these things and make a ball. Make it a very tight ball so that it does not break. Divide this ball into two parts and place a plant in the middle. Then, shape it into a ball again. Take moss grass and soak it for 2-3 hours. Next, drain off all the water and wrap it around the ball. Then, tie the ball completely with thick thread or thin rope. Dip the ball in water. After this, it will retain moisture for several days. When you feel that the ball of the plant is drying, spray it with water.
