Army’s T-72 tanks updated with indigenous thermal system, now can hit the enemy accurately even in darkness

The Indian Army has upgraded its 96 T-72 tanks with the new night fighting system under Make in India. Indigenous Thermal Imaging Fire Control System (TIFCS) has been installed in these tanks. The army has also completed their firing tests.

T-72 tank is an important part of the army’s armored fleet. This upgrade has been done so that the tank can work better even in low light and at night. Older optical systems were limited at night. The new system targets more accurately with the help of thermal imaging and automatic target tracking.

This company updated the tanks

This upgrade has been done by Bangalore-based company Alpha-Alsec Defense and Aerospace Systems Pvt. Ltd. This company is a joint venture with Alpha Design and Elbit Systems of Israel. The Army had signed a contract for the supply and installation of 96 TIFCS systems in 2023. The company said that earlier such systems used to come directly from Israel, but this time they have been made in India itself. Elbit Systems provided technical support in this. This step has been taken under the government’s policy of Make in India and self-reliance in the defense sector.

Will help in precise attack at night

The new TIFCS system automatically makes ballistic corrections by taking information from external sensors and provides accurate target information to the fire control system. Its automatic target tracker can continuously keep an eye on the moving target. With this, precise attacks can be made on the enemy during war, especially at night. The firing test of these indigenous systems was conducted by the Army in November-December 2025. After successful testing, all installations were completed.

The company also exports abroad

Company CEO Nataraj Krishnappa said that about 120 employees work in his company and it is moving forward in the field of manufacturing advanced opto-electronic equipment for the army. The company also exports some of its products abroad. The company said that with the completion of this order, it is expected to get more new defense contracts in the country. Apart from the army, its electro-optic systems are also being used in paramilitary forces and some civilian sectors.
