Rainy nights, leaking roofs and weak walls, this is the everyday story for those living in kutcha houses in the village. But the life of Bhuiri Bai of Surguja district of Chhattisgarh has now changed. The family which once lived in an unsafe kutcha house, is today living in a pucca house with respect and security. This change became possible under the Central Government’s Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Rural).
Difficulties of kutcha house, trouble in every season
Bhuiri Bai, who lives in Kunwarpur village panchayat of Lakhanpur development block of Surguja district, says that earlier her family used to live in a kutcha house. Water would leak during rains, the walls would become wet and weak and there would be a lot of problems in summer and winter. The house was small and not safe. Every year the repair expenses had to be borne separately. In such a situation, there was a dream of having a permanent house, but due to lack of money, that dream seemed far away.

Approval received under the scheme, then a big test came
The house was approved under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Rural) in the name of Bhuiri Bai’s husband Kanshi Ram. The family together started building a permanent house. But her husband died during the construction of the house. This was a big shock for the family. Despite this, the construction of the house was completed with the financial assistance received under the scheme. Today the same pucca house is the biggest support for Bhuiri Bai.
Not only the house, but also the benefits of other schemes
Bhuiri Bai says that if she had not received government help, she would never have been able to build a permanent house. Now they not only got a safe roof, but are also benefiting from other schemes.
- Getting regular ration under public distribution system
- Food security ensured with rice, pulses and sugar
- After getting gas connection under Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, she now cooks in a smoke-free kitchen.
Earlier, smoke from wood and stove used to affect health. Now cooking with gas has become easy and safe.
Life with respect, this is the biggest relief
Bhuiri Bai says that now her biggest relief is that she lives in a safe house. There is no fear of rain or storm. Expressing his gratitude towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Vishnu Dev Sai, he said that the government schemes have brought a big change in his life.
Administration’s claim: Benefits reach eligible people
Surguja district administration says that the benefits of the schemes are being extended to the eligible beneficiaries with transparency. The objective is that every needy family can get permanent housing, food security and basic facilities.
The effect of government schemes is visible only when they reach the needy directly. Bhuiri Bai’s story is not just of one family, but of thousands of rural families for whom a pucca roof is not just a house but the beginning of a secure and respectable life.
