Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate Micron Technology’s modern ATMP i.e. Assembly, Testing, Marking and Packaging plant in Sanand, Gujarat on 28 February. This project, built with an investment of Rs 22,516 crore, is being considered a big step in India’s semiconductor journey. This is being said to be an important initiative towards strengthening electronics manufacturing in the country. This plant will make memory and storage products for everyday used devices and will meet the demand of the country as well as abroad.
The biggest benefit for the common people will be seen in the form of employment and earning opportunities. At present about 2,000 people are working in the Sanand plant. In the coming time, this number may increase to about 5,000 direct employment. These jobs will include engineers, technicians and operators. The special thing is that in this flant, priority will be given to people who are physically challenged. This factory has also given an opportunity to disabled people to work as operators and technicians.
What will be the benefit to the people?
Apart from employment, the country’s electronics and digital manufacturing system will be strengthened in the long run. The ATMP factory will manufacture SSD storage devices, DRAM and NAND memory products. All these are essential parts of devices like smartphones, laptops and data storage systems. If the semiconductor system in the country becomes stronger, then the supply chain of electronics can improve in future.
What will Micron build in Sanand?
This plant will make integrated circuit packages, modules and solid state drives (SSD). Here, DRAM and NAND wafers will be brought from Micron’s foreign factories, which will be converted into finished memory products. The production process will include assembling, testing and packing for the market. Micron Chairman and CEO Sanjay Mehrotra said that memory and storage are an important part of modern technology, especially in Artificial Intelligence (AI), where fast processing requires strong memory.
What will be the effect?
The biggest impact of this plant will be seen in Sanand and surrounding industrial areas, where semiconductor related investments and industries can increase. This project will be developed in different phases and there are plans to expand it in the coming years. As Sanand Semiconductor Hub grows, the demand for surrounding services like transport, housing, small suppliers and maintenance services will also increase. There is a possibility of development of more industries and infrastructure around Sanand Industrial Area.
