Jyotirmath Shankaracharya controversy: Uttarakhand saints react to sexual abuse allegations, call it unfortunate

Dehradun: The religious and political atmosphere in Uttar Pradesh has been shaken by allegations against Shankaracharya Swami Avimukteshwarananda Saraswati of Jyotirpeeth.

What began as a dispute during the Magh Mela over bathing arrangements and administrative interference has now escalated into criminal charges of sexual exploitation.

From Magh Mela to controversy

The conflict started when Shankaracharya raised objections to the administration’s handling of bathing traditions during the Magh Mela. He claimed religious rights were being ignored, while officials cited security concerns. The disagreement soon turned into a public war of words. Statements made by Shankaracharya regarding Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath further fueled political tension.

Supporters allege that since then, his activities have been closely monitored and that the administration has acted with malice. The recent allegations of sexual abuse have intensified the controversy. A case has been registered, and a petition for anticipatory bail has been filed in the High Court.

Uttarakhand connection

Shankaracharya has deep ties to Uttarakhand, with ashrams in Joshimath and Haridwar. He spends significant time in both places, and saints in the region have long respected him. The sudden allegations have left the saint community disturbed. Some saints admit that Shankaracharya has used harsh words in the past and should control his anger, but they also believe the charges are politically motivated.

Akhara Parishad President’s reaction

Akhara Parishad President Ravindra Puri said such accusations are equivalent to death for saints and Shankaracharyas. He called the matter very unfortunate, adding that saints will now hesitate to even keep children or students with them for fear of false allegations. He also remarked that Shankaracharya had crossed limits with his words and may now be facing the consequences.

Juna Akhara’s response

Mahamandaleshwar Pramodananda Giri of Juna Akhara described the situation as extremely unfortunate. He alleged that the government and administration are acting out of malice. According to him, the controversy could have been avoided if Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had sought an apology from the administration after the Magh Mela dispute.

He further claimed that the allegations are fabricated, pointing out inconsistencies in complaints and highlighting that cameras are installed in the area where incidents are alleged to have occurred. He believes Shankaracharya is being framed since the Magh Mela controversy.

Many believe the charges are politically motivated

The allegations against Shankaracharya Avimukteshwarananda Saraswati have created shockwaves in the saint community of Uttarakhand. While some criticize his choice of words, many believe the charges are politically motivated. The matter remains under investigation, and the controversy continues to stir both religious and political circles.
