Story of Chandra Grahan: This year, a lunar eclipse will occur on March 03, the full moon day of Phalgun month. This eclipse will be visible in India. Because of this, its Sutak period will also be valid. The phenomenon of lunar eclipse is considered very special in astronomy. According to astronomy, when the Earth comes between the Sun and the Moon, a lunar eclipse occurs. The event of lunar eclipse is also considered very important from religious and astrological point of view.
From religious point of view, Rahu and Ketu are said to be the cause of lunar eclipse. The story related to this is described in the Avanti section of Skanda Purana. In such a situation, let us know why Rahu tries to swallow the Moon?
According to Skanda Purana…
According to Skanda Purana, the gods and demons together churned the ocean, from which many precious things came out. Amrit emerged from the churning of the ocean. When nectar came out during the churning of the ocean, there was a dispute between the gods and demons regarding drinking it. On this Lord Vishnu took the form of Mohini and came to resolve the dispute. After this they started giving nectar to the gods.
The demon named Swarbhanu came to know about this cunningness of Lord Vishnu. Then he assumed the form of gods and sat in the row of gods and drank nectar from the hands of Lord Vishnu in the form of Mohini. The Sun and the Moon came to know about this. He informed Vishnu about this in the form of Mohini. Knowing this, Lord Vishnu got angry.
That’s why Rahu tries to swallow the moon
He cut off Swarbhanu’s head with his Chakra, but Swarbhanu had already drunk the nectar. That’s why he did not die. The head of Swarbhanu is called Rahu and the torso is called Ketu. According to the story, the secret of Swarbhanu was revealed due to the Sun and the Moon. Therefore, from time to time, Rahu i.e. Swarbhanu’s head tries to swallow the Sun and the Moon, hence an eclipse occurs.
