New Delhi: A woman and her 3 daughters were found murdered at their Samaypur Badli residence in north Delhi on Wednesday. The murders came to light after neighbours alerted the police. The prime suspect in the case is the woman’s husband, who is currently absconding, said the police.
Motive not known: Police
According to the police, the motive behind the murders is not clear yet. Deputy Commissioner of police (outer north) Hareshwar Swami, was quoted by Hindustan Times as saying that the deceased were identified as Anita and her 3 minor daughters. The girls were aged 5, 4 and 3. The woman was 30 years old.
The family hailed from Patna district in Bihar and had been living in a rented house in Chandan Park. The woman’s husband, who is the prime suspect in the case, has been identified as Munchun Kewat. He sells ginger in Azadpur Mandi.
According to the Deputy Commissioner, the police team rushed to the spot after being alerted by neighbours. When the team reached the ground-floor house, they found the bodies of Anita and her 3 children lying on the floor of the house. There was blood all around, they added. The police said that the throats of all the deceased were slit using a sharp weapon.
The crime team and a forensic team collected the evidence from the house, said officials. Kewat had been since early Wednesday morning, said Swami. The police have constituted several teams to trace and arrest him at the earliest.
The police have filed a case under Section 103(1) (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at the SP Badli Police Station.
Couple had good relations, no marital discord: Family
According to Kewats’s family members there was no marital discord between the couple. While Kewat and his family lived in a single-room house in Chandan Nagar, 2 of his elder brothers lived just 3 streets away from them.
On Wednesday, Sugni Devi, who is the sister-in-law of Kewat said that her 10-year-old son wanted to go to Azadpur Mandi with his paternal uncle. Since he had been pestering his parents to send him there for a long time, his mother permitted him on that day. He then ran to his uncle’s place in Chandan Vihar. According to the boy, he opened the main gate of the house which was locked from outside and entered the house.
When he went inside, he saw that the door of the room where Kewat’s family lived was open and the curtain covering it was also removed. The boy entered and saw what he described as ‘gory’. He saw his aunt and her 3 daughters, lying in a pool of blood.
The young boy, shaken by what he had seen, rushed out immediately and alerted a neighbour. Two men from the neighbourhood also saw the bodies. Another neighbour, Sushma Devi, who lives on the floor above the Kewat family, called the police.
According to family members, Anita had come to Delhi just 3 months back. Earlier, since she gave birth to 3 daughters the family decided that she needed proper care and hence allowed her to live with her own family.
They said that Munchun Kewat loved his wife and daughters. He cared for them very well, added his sister-in-law. There was no marital discord between them, she added.
While the family and neighbours mostly claimed that all was well between the couple, the police said that 1 of the family’s neighbours claimed to have heard some arguments between the couple on Tuesday night. The neighbour also reportedly told the police, that after the verbal duel, he saw Munchun Kewat leave the house at around 5 am on Wednesday morning.
The police are investigating the matter and hope for a breakthrough soon.
