Rules of Guruwar fasting: In Hindu religion, Thursday is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and Jupiter. Fast is observed for Lord Vishnu on Thursday. Also, Lord Vishnu is worshiped with rituals. It is believed that by fasting and worshiping on this day, Lord Vishnu fulfills all the wishes. By observing fast on Thursday, one gets the blessings of Goddess Lakshmi along with Lord Vishnu.

According to religious beliefs, fasting on 16 Thursdays is auspicious. After observing fast on 16 Thursdays, break the fast on 17th Thursday. Apart from this, Thursday fast can be observed for 1, 3, 5, 7 or 9 years. Thursday’s fast should be started from the date of Anuradha Nakshatra and Shukla Paksha of the month. Fast should not be started on Thursday in the month of Pausha.

Method of Thursday fast

On Thursday morning, wake up before sunrise, take bath and wear yellow clothes. Meditate on Lord Vishnu and Jupiter and take a pledge to fast. Then during the puja, offer yellow clothes, flowers, fruits, sweets etc. to Lord Vishnu. Worship banana tree and use banana leaves during the fast. Light a lamp during the puja and read the story of the fast. Perform aarti of Lord Vishnu and Jupiter.

What are the rules of Thursday fast?

Do not consume salt during Thursday fast. Do not consume banana. Do not wear black and blue clothes. Do not insult saints, animals and birds. Do not sew. Avoid buying puja items. Women should not wash their hair. Do not cut nails.
