The name of this arrogant king was Hiranyakashyap.
Hiranyakashipu was a demon. Hiranyakashyap is also known as Hiranyakashipu. According to mythology, Hiranyakashyap started considering himself as God. Hiranyakashyap had a son, whose name was Prahlad. Prahlad used to worship Lord Vishnu and was absorbed in his devotion.
Hiranyakashyap tortured his son
When father Hiranyakashyap came to know about this, he started torturing Prahlad. Not only this, Hiranyakashyap asked his sister Holika to sit in the fire with Prahlad. Because Holika was blessed that fire would not burn her. On the advice of Hiranyakashyap, Holika sat with Prahlad, but she herself started burning.
Lord Brahma was pleased with 36000 years of penance.
It is believed that the festival of Holika Dahan is celebrated because of the burning of Holika. According to the stories, Hiranyakashyap had become so arrogant in his mind because of the boon he received from Lord Brahma. Actually, Hiranyakashyap had pleased Lord Brahma by performing rigorous penance. According to religious scriptures, Hiranyakashyap had performed severe penance for Lord Brahma for 36000 years. Only then Brahma ji became happy.
Hiranyakashyap asked for a strange boon
After this, when Lord Brahma asked for a boon from the demon king, he asked for a strange boon. He asked for a boon from Lord Brahma that he should die neither at the hands of any human nor at the hands of any animal. He should die neither during the night nor during the day; no one can kill him either inside or outside the house. Not only this, he also asked that he should not die either on earth or in the sky, nor by any weapon.
Arrogance after receiving a boon
Lord Brahma gave him a boon. Hiranyakashyap became extremely arrogant after receiving the boon. After this he started considering himself as God. He even ordered his subjects to worship themselves like God. All three people were horrified by his atrocities. After Holika’s death, Prahlad explained a lot to his father, but Hiranyakashyap did not understand.
This is how Lord Narasimha killed
Finally Lord Vishnu appeared in Narasimha avatar. He picked up Hiranyakashipu and took him to the threshold of the palace. God threw him on his thighs and tore his chest with his nails. Lord Narasimha honored the boon given on the day of Brahma. When he killed Hiranyakashipu neither during the day nor at night. They killed him in the evening.
God did not kill him either inside or outside the house. They hit him on the threshold. Lord Narasimha was neither completely human nor animal. He neither hit Hiranyakashyap on earth nor in the sky, but hit him with his nails on his thighs.
