The conflict between Russia and Ukraine is the biggest war after World War II. The war that had been going on for 1460 days changed the world economy. Russia had to face sanctions. There were 9.25 lakh deaths. Money was wasted like water. Four years have been completed since the war between the two countries started on February 24, 2022. On this pretext, let us know what both the countries lost and how much impact the war had on the climate.
Statistics tell the story of how the war between Russia and Ukraine became a matter of concern for both. The report by the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) and the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute tells the painful story of the war.
How many deaths?
CSIS figures show that in the last 4 years there have been 3,25,000 deaths in Russia, including soldiers and civilians. In Ukraine this figure is almost double. 6,00,000 people of Ukraine died in the attacks carried out by Russia. This includes both soldiers and civilians.

At the same time, the report of the United Nations Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine says that 15,168 people of Ukraine were killed in the last 4 years. 41,534 were seriously injured. It is also being claimed that the year 2026 may prove to be more dangerous in terms of deaths and attacks.
Defense budget skyrocketed for war
Data from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) report show how both countries spent money on war like water. Before the start of the war, Ukraine’s defense budget in the year 2021 was only Rs 58 crore. After the start of the war, Ukraine’s defense budget increased to Rs 3.5 lakh crore in the year 2022. However, in the years 2023 and 2024, Ukraine has kept its budget for war at Rs 5.91 lakh crore.

Russia adopted an aggressive stance in the matter of defense budget. Before the war, Russia’s defense budget was Rs 5.5 lakh crore, which increased by more than one and a half times in the year 2022 after the war. In the year 2022, this figure will become Rs 8.56 lakh crore. The insistence on wasting money like water to win the war continued. In the year 2023, Russia increased defense to Rs 9.14 lakh crore and exactly one year later in 2024 it increased to Rs 13 lakh crore.
How much area lost?
The war was at its peak in March 2022. Russia attacked and captured 26 percent of Ukraine. The Institute for the Study of War, a Washington think tank, says this is confirmed by geographical footage. This included Crimea, which Russia annexed in January 2014, and large parts of the eastern regions of Luhansk and Donetsk, where pro-Russian separatist forces had been fighting Kiev forces since February 2014.
