Shivamogga: A 15-year-old student, Sanket, was beaten to death by his classmates in Sulebailu, on the outskirts of Shivamogga, Karnataka. The incident occurred when the students were returning home after special classes. There was a fight between two groups of students on the way. It is alleged that three students from another community were beating a boy named Girish. Sanket reached there to save his friend Girish. Meanwhile, all three also attacked Sanket. The beating was so severe that Sanket collapsed on the spot and died. Doctors have confirmed that Sanket had died before he could be brought to the hospital.
There is a possibility of communal tension spreading in the area after Sanket’s death. In view of this, Tunganagar police has taken precautionary measures. As soon as information about the incident was received, many senior police officers including SP Nikhil reached the spot and the hospital and took information about the matter.
What did Girish, who was injured in the attack, tell?
Girish told, “After coming out of the school, 5-6 people took me to a ground and beat me badly. After the beating, I almost became unconscious. When I regained consciousness, I saw Sanket lying on the ground and called the teacher and brought him. The teacher immediately took Sanket to the hospital. The boys who attacked were from Eidgah Nagar of Sulebailu. These are the students who have failed in 10th and now sit in 9th class and used to fight. Despite the headmaster being there, they create a ruckus. Because of the special classes, the school runs from 8:30 am to 9:30 pm, so the parents come to pick us up.”
MLA angry over police negligence
MLA Channabasappa has given a sharp reaction on this incident. He said, “The fight continued till 9:30 pm and Sanket lost his life. Injured Girish is narrating the entire incident. It is being said that the school teachers and the police were aware of the ongoing fights between the students. Is the police department only there to bear the burden of Hindus?”
The MLA raised the question, “Students who have failed in 10th come to class 9 and indulge in bullying, how can this happen? Due to the negligence of the police department, Sanket has lost his life.” He said angrily, “People say don’t name a minor. We named him at the time of birth. Take away your law and throw it in the dustbin.”
