What happened on flight SG-121?
According to sources, flight SG-121 took off from Delhi for Leh, but engine number 2 failed just minutes after takeoff. The pilot immediately informed Air Traffic Control (ATC) and returned safely to Delhi Airport. A SpiceJet spokesperson said there was no fire or warning in the cockpit on the flight. The flight had to return only due to technical problem. All passengers were disembarked safely and the airline also arranged onward flights for the affected passengers.
Common causes of engine failure in flights
According to the airline and DGCA, there can be several reasons behind engine failure:
- Mechanical failure: Wear and tear on engine parts or outdated machinery
- Fuel issue: Poor fuel quality or problem in fuel system
- Collision with birds: Collision with birds on runway or during flight
- Aviation Maintenance: No timely check and maintenance
Airlines like SpiceJet take every technical issue seriously and conduct regular maintenance checks to reduce the risk of any further engine failure.
SpiceJet’s emergency management
SpiceJet trains pilots under Standard Operating Procedure (SOP). These include:
- Notifying ATC immediately in case of technical problems
- Making emergency landing at airport if required
- Ensuring safety and comfort of passengers
- Detailed inspection of the entire aircraft after the flight
Recently, there were technical emergencies in other SpiceJet flights also. In one of these, there was a pressurization problem and the flight had to make an emergency landing. Regulatory authorities like DGCA are constantly checking airlines to ensure the safety of passengers.
