In Hindu religion, snakes are considered as gods and they are also worshipped. Many mythological stories related to snakes have also been described in religious texts. There is mention of 8 snakes in religious scriptures, which are called Ashtanaag.
However, among these 8 snakes, there are 3 snakes which are considered to be the most powerful. These three snakes are Sheshnag, Vasuki and Takshak. There are different beliefs and stories about these three snakes.
Who was Sheshnag?
Sheshnag is also called “Anant”, which means “which has no end”. In Hindu religion, it is considered the seat of Lord Vishnu. Sheshnag has a thousand hoods and is carrying the weight of the earth on its head.
Who was Vasuki Naga?
Vasuki is considered the king of all snakes, who is seated around the neck of Lord Shiva. Vasuki has hundred hoods. After Sheshnag, he was made Nagraj and he ruled the serpents for ages.
Who was Takshak Nag?
Takshak, considered the most dangerous of all serpents, is mentioned in the Mahabharata. It is believed that Takshak snake had bitten King Parikshit, due to which he died.

Vishnu’s bed:- Sheshnag is known as the Anant (last) bed of Lord Vishnu, on which Sri Hari rests in Yoga Nidra.

Churning of the ocean:- There is a religious belief that Vasuki Nag used it in the form of a rope to wrap the Mandarachal mountain during the churning of the ocean.
Sacrifice and service:- Vasuki is considered a symbol of sacrifice and service, as he dedicated himself during the churning of the ocean.
King of snakes:- Vasuki is also known as the king of serpents and is considered the lord of Naglok.
takshak snake
Most deadly:- Takshak snake is known for its power and poison. It is said that their poison is the most deadly in the entire world.
Produce:- Takshak Nag was born from the womb of sage Kashyap and Kadru.
Residence:- Takshak snake lived in the underworld and was considered the most poisonous among the snakes.
Most cruel:- Takshak Nag has been described as the most fierce, cruel and flying snake among the snakes.
According to Hindu mythology, Sheshnag is considered to be the most powerful, as he is associated with Lord Vishnu and carries the weight of the universe. Vasuki Naga is also powerful, but his mention is mainly associated with Lord Shiva. Takshak Nag is also very poisonous and powerful, but he is not associated with deities like Sheshnag and Vasuki Nag.
