UGC Fake Universities List 2026: As soon as the list of fake universities was released by UG, there has been a stir among students and parents across the country. The University Grants Commission (UGC) has declared 32 institutions as fake universities in February 2026. The Commission clearly says that these institutions are neither recognized by the Central Government nor by any State Government, hence the degree issued by them will not be valid for job or higher education.
Most fake universities in Delhi
According to the latest list of UGC, Delhi is at the top in terms of fake universities. 12 institutions have been found running universities illegally in the capital. After this, 4 institutions have been identified in Uttar Pradesh. 2 institutes each in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Puducherry and West Bengal have been found fake, while 1 institute each in Arunachal Pradesh, Haryana, Jharkhand and Rajasthan are included in the list.
Which kind of university is declared fake by UGC?
UGC has clarified that institutions which are not recognized under Section 2(f) and 3 of the UGC Act are not legally entitled to award degrees. Many institutions mislead students by calling themselves “Open Universities”, “International Universities” or “Deemed Universities” when they do not have any valid permission. Taking admission in such institutions means risking time, money and career.
What is the harm of studying from a fake university?
If a student obtains a degree from a fake university, he may have to face many serious problems-
- Applications for government jobs may be rejected.
- PSUs and reputed private companies do not accept degrees.
- Admission is not available in postgraduation or PhD in other recognized universities.
- Many times students have to start studies again from a recognized institute.

UGC has advised students to check the affiliation of any university before taking admission in it. For this-
- Visit the official website of UGC to see the list of recognized universities.
- Confirm the institutions listed under sections 2(f) and 12(B).
- Check the institutions claiming “Deemed to be University” separately.
- Be wary of colleges that promise a degree in a short time or a 100% job guarantee
