‘Asked to wear a padded bra’: Taapsee Pannu opens up about shocking demands on film sets

Mumbai: Actress Taapsee Pannu, who has worked across the regional film industry as well as Bollywood, opened up about her experiences. In a recent interview, she talked about the shocking expectations actresses have to meet on film sets.

Speaking to Shubhankar Mishra, the actress recollected an instance from a set in the South. “In the South, they are often asked to wear a padded bra. And the problem is, who does the director even tell on set?” said the actress. She claimed that everyone from the assistant director to the wardrobe woman would know of the director’s instruction. “Imagine how embarrassing it would be. You’re shooting a song, someone gets up in the middle, walks off, everyone knows exactly what’s happening. All the men are sitting there, watching what looks different when you come back,” said the actress.

She went on to state that the Bhojpuri and South Indian cinema focus more on the naval, while cleavage mattered in the Hindi film industry. “I’m also trying to understand. It’s not that item songs in Hindi cinema don’t focus on it, but it’s not as much as in South Cinema. Hindi cinema is more about cleavage,” said Taapsee.

In another interview, Taapsee talked about how a woman’s sensuality was conveyed through her midriff by a filmmaker who had launched her.

“I don’t know what’s sensuous about a coconut hitting my midriff,” said the actress. At the time, her comments caused havoc on social media. The Telugu audience was offended by her statement. They did not approve of her comments against the celebrated filmmaker.

Responding to the public, she issued an apology. “I didn’t intend to hurt anyone. I wanted to make fun of myself and how my debut film happened to me. It took me a little while to understand that what I said was wrong. I really want to apologise if I hurt anyone’s sentiments,” said the actress in a video message.
