Final voter list released in Tamil Nadu: 5.44 crore electors; Sholinganallur tops, Chennai sees 28.30 lakh voters

Chennai: The final electoral roll for the upcoming 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections was officially released on Monday, February 23, following the completion of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process. Chief Electoral Officer Archana Patnaik, IAS unveiled the district-wise statistics at the state Secretariat, with copies distributed to political party representatives in the presence of respective District Collectors.

According to the final voter list, Tamil Nadu now has a total of approximately 5.44 crore electors, a significant reduction from the previous count of 6.41 crore. The Election Commission has removed about 97.37 lakh names from the draft list to eliminate fake voters, duplicate registrations, and entries of deceased persons or those who have migrated.

During this SIR process, approximately 66 lakh new voters who have completed 18 years of age have been added to the electoral roll. The gender-wise breakdown of voters across the state includes about 2.77 crore male voters, 2.66 crore female voters, and approximately 8,500 third-gender electors.

In Chennai district specifically, the final voter list includes a total of 28,30,936 electors. This marks a significant increase from the draft electoral roll published last December, which had included only 25,79,676 voters for the capital’s 16 assembly constituencies. Following the publication of the draft list, 2,51,260 new voters have been added in Chennai.

Prior to the special revision, Chennai district had recorded 40,04,694 voters, indicating that approximately 11.74 lakh names were removed during the verification process before the addition of new electors.

The gender composition in Chennai comprises 13,65,763 male voters, 14,64,344 female voters, and 829 third-gender electors.

Constituency-wise voter breakdown in Chennai

Among Chennai’s 16 assembly constituencies, Perambur has emerged with the highest number of voters at 2,22,792, followed closely by Velachery with 2,11,691 and Kolathur with 2,07,251. Other constituencies with over two lakh voters include Saidapet at 2,00,607.
