Tiruppur: A 22-year-old migrant worker from Odisha allegedly slit his girlfriend’s throat at the Tiruppur railway station in Tamil Nadu after she reportedly introduced him to her new boyfriend. The accused has been arrested, and the critically injured woman is undergoing treatment at a government hospital.
Five-year relationship turns sour
The accused, identified as Prakash Maji, hails from the Kabarkal area of Palangir district in Odisha. According to police, he and the 22-year-old victim were childhood friends from the same village, and their friendship blossomed into love over five years. The couple had been in a relationship for the past half-decade.
Both had migrated to Tamil Nadu in search of employment. Prakash Maji secured a job at a private company in Karur district, while his girlfriend joined a private banyan (garment) company near Palladam in Tiruppur district, approximately 80 kilometers away.
The fateful encounter
Recent developments, however, took a dramatic turn. Police sources indicate that the victim’s affections had shifted, and she had reportedly entered into a relationship with another man. When Prakash Maji learned of this, he decided to confront her and allegedly planned to take her back to their hometown.
On the day of the incident, Prakash Maji invited his girlfriend to meet him at the Tiruppur railway station. What he did not anticipate was that the woman would arrive accompanied by her new boyfriend.
In a shocking display of insensitivity that ultimately triggered the violence, the victim reportedly introduced the new man to Prakash Maji and explicitly stated her preference for her new partner.
The attack and aftermath
Enraged by the confrontation, Prakash Maji allegedly pulled out a blade he had concealed and slit his girlfriend’s throat in front of horrified onlookers. The young woman collapsed at the scene, profusely bleeding from the severe wound.
Her new boyfriend, witnessing the brutal attack, fled the spot immediately, leaving the injured woman behind. Nearby residents and railway commuters rushed to the victim’s aid and admitted her to a nearby hospital, where she is currently receiving intensive treatment. Her condition is reported to be critical.
Arrest and investigation
Railway police personnel present at the scene apprehended Prakash Maji before he could escape the station premises. He has been taken into custody, and an intensive investigation is underway. Police are recording statements from eyewitnesses and gathering evidence, including reviewing CCTV footage from the railway station. Further investigations are ongoing.
