Karl Darlow has turned down the chance to extend his spell at Leeds United, instead opting for a high-profile move to Manchester United, citing the stature and history of the Red Devils as pivotal in his decision.
The 35-year-old goalkeeper was officially unveiled by United on Tuesday, immediately becoming a focal point in the club’s summer recruitment drive amid uncertainty surrounding the futures of Andre Onana, Altay Bayindir, and Radek Vitek.
Darlow, who seized the number one spot from Lucas Perri last season at Leeds, was the subject of persistent contract extension offers from the Yorkshire club. Despite Leeds’ efforts to secure his services for the coming campaign, Darlow rejected their proposals, choosing instead to join Michael Carrick’s squad at Old Trafford. United have confirmed that Darlow will wear the number 12 shirt, previously occupied by Tyrell Malacia.
The goalkeeper’s arrival comes as United face significant upheaval in their goalkeeping ranks. Onana has already completed a loan move to Trabzonspor, while Bayindir and Vitek are reportedly seeking regular first-team opportunities away from Manchester. Darlow’s availability as a free agent, coupled with his Premier League pedigree, positioned him as an immediate solution for United’s goalkeeping department.
Speaking to club media, Darlow was unequivocal about his reasons for joining Manchester United. “I think it’s obvious. I think the stature of the club, and obviously the history and what it brings – and [it’s] probably, in my opinion, the biggest club in the world,” Darlow stated. “As soon as you hear of interest from a club like Man United, then yeah, the obvious answer is yes. I’m just delighted that it’s gone through.”
Darlow also outlined his ambitions and what he hopes to contribute within the Old Trafford dressing room. “I think [it’s about] driving each other on, being supportive. We all know the role and we’ve all played in that position,” he explained. “Sometimes it can be lonely, sometimes you feel on top of the world, so I think it’s important to have that emotional awareness of one another and also pushing on professionally, to get the best out of one another. Healthy competition is brilliant, and that’s something that I look to add.”
He continued, “I just want to embrace everything that this club is about. Obviously you see it from the outside and then you come here and Carrington is just incredible from what I’ve seen already. It’s something you can’t not be excited about. I’m really pleased to be here, and looking forward to getting to work.”
Manchester United supporters could see Darlow in action for the first time this weekend, as Michael Carrick’s side prepare to face Wrexham in their opening pre-season friendly.
