Afghanistan-Pakistan Border Strike: Tension between Afghanistan and Pakistan has increased once again. On Sunday night, Pakistan Army carried out a ‘targeted strike’ in Nangarhar and Paktika provinces bordering Afghanistan and Pakistan. According to Afghan officials, dozens of people, including women and children, have died in these attacks. Reports claim that at least 17 members of the same family were killed. Pakistan has called it an action against terrorists, but Afghanistan is calling it an attack on civilians.

What happened in Pakistan-Afghanistan?

Afghan government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said Pakistani troops targeted civilian areas, killing and injuring several people. According to local media reports, a bomb was dropped on a house in Behsud district, after which several family members were found dead buried under the debris. According to Afghan broadcaster TOLOnews, 23 people in a house were buried under the debris, of whom only a few could be pulled out. Relief and rescue operations continued till late night. Claims were also made on social media that 19 people from the same family were present in the house at that time and very few people survived.

Pakistan claims intelligence-based operation

Pakistan has confirmed these air strikes. Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said the operation was ‘intelligence based and precise’, in which seven terrorist hideouts were targeted. They claim that these attacks were carried out on targets associated with Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and Islamic State. According to Pakistani media reports, this operation was conducted in response to the recent suicide attacks in Islamabad, Bajaur and Bannu. Security forces and civilians were killed in these attacks.

Allegations and counter-allegations in Afghanistan and Pakistan

Islamabad has long alleged that Afghanistan’s Taliban government has failed to prevent its land from being used by anti-Pakistan terrorist groups. Pakistan says that it has solid evidence of the recent attacks, which are linked to the leaders sitting in Afghanistan. However, Kabul rejects these allegations outright and says that it will not allow its land to be used against any country.

What will be the impact on Pakistan-Afghanistan relations?

Foreign affairs experts believe that these attacks can worsen already tense relations. Border skirmishes, border closures and diplomatic rhetoric have increased continuously in recent months. If the situation is not controlled, the military and political conflict between the two countries may deepen, which will affect the security of the entire region.
