A total lunar eclipse will be visible in America on March 3, 2026. This is a rare astronomical event, because the next total lunar eclipse will be seen only in 2029. During this time, the Moon will completely come under the Earth’s shadow and will become red in colour, which is also called ‘Blood Moon’.
California: Astronomy lovers across America are eagerly waiting for the total lunar eclipse on March 3, 2026. This rare sight seen on Tuesday morning is also special because after this, the next total lunar eclipse will not be seen in America until 2029. Ahead of this major astronomical event, NASA’s Scientific Visualization Studio has released timings and detailed maps for different states of America, so that people can know when the eclipse will be visible in their area.
Amazing total lunar eclipse is coming
The full moon of March is traditionally called ‘Worm Moon’. The name symbolizes the beginning of spring, when the ground thaws and earthworms start coming out again. It will also be the third and last full moon of winter in the Northern Hemisphere. The moon will rise on the evening of March 2, but the real spectacle will begin in the morning of March 3. A total lunar eclipse will occur when the Moon completely passes into Earth’s deep dark shadow. During this time, the moon will turn dark red, which is commonly called a “blood moon”.
This entire eclipse will last for more than five hours. But its most important part, i.e. the state of total eclipse, will last for 58 minutes and 15 seconds. It is completely safe to view all phases of this eclipse with the naked eye. This experience will be even more spectacular if viewed with the help of binoculars or a telescope.
time to view lunar eclipse
The total eclipse will be visible at different times in different time zones of the US.
- Eastern Time: 6:04 am to 7:02 am
- Central Time: 5:04 am to 6:02 am
- Mountain Time: 4:04 am to 5:02 am
- Pacific Time: 3:04 am to 4:02 am
- Alaska Time: 2:04 am to 3:02 am
- Hawaii Standard Time: 1:04 am to 2:02 am
In the eastern states, the eclipse may continue even when the moon is setting. At the same time, in the western states the moon will be higher in the sky, due to which the view there will be even clearer.
After this March eclipse, the next total lunar eclipse will be visible in the world on December 31, 2028. In North America it will be seen again only on June 26, 2029. However, there will also be a partial lunar eclipse on 27-28 August 2026 in which the Moon will be covered up to 93%, but according to reports, it will not have the beauty like the total eclipse of March.
