Remedies for Holashtak: The period of eight days before the festival of Holi is called Holashtak. The word ‘Holashtak’ is made up of ‘Holi’ and ‘Ashtak’ (eight days). In the year 2026, this time will start from 25th February and will last till 3rd March i.e. Holika Dahan. In the scriptures and astrology, these eight days are considered prohibited and inauspicious for auspicious works. It is believed that during this time the influence of negative energy increases in the world, due to which the chances of any new work being successful reduces. This time is not set for celebration but for self-restraint and devotion, so that planetary influences can be avoided.
Planetary Aggression and Astrological Perspective
According to astrology, during the eight days of Holashtak, the eight major planets of the solar system remain in a furious state. The influence of Moon on Ashtami, Sun on Navami, Saturn on Dashami, Vishnu (Mercury) on Ekadashi, Jupiter on Dwadashi, Venus on Trayodashi, Mars on Chaturdashi and Rahu on Purnima is in negative direction. Due to this aggressiveness of the planets, a person’s decision making ability and mental peace can be affected. When the planets are not in a favorable position, there is a fear of hindrances in the auspicious works like marriage, mundan or house warming initiated at that time. Therefore, it is advised to maintain calmness of mind and be patient during this period.
Devotee Prahlad’s pain and mythological reasons
According to religious beliefs, the story of devotee Prahlad is the main reason behind considering Holashtak inauspicious. Demon king Hiranyakashyap had tortured his own son Prahlad from Phalgun Shukla Ashtami till Purnima to make him leave his devotion to Lord Vishnu. For these eight days, Prahlad had suffered sufferings akin to death, due to which this entire period came to be considered a symbol of grief and suffering. In the end, only after the defeat of Holika and the victory of Prahlad on the full moon day, the atmosphere again became pure and auspicious. This is the reason why doing any festive or auspicious work of happiness during Holashtak is prohibited in the scriptures.
Precaution and spiritual remedies in inauspicious times
If you take some precautions during Holashtak, you can avoid its negative effects. During this time, one should give up Tamasic food and intoxicants so that the ferocity of the planets does not dominate your behaviour. This time is prohibited for new work, but it is considered extremely effective for chanting mantras, meditation and charity. Chanting “Om Namo Bhagwate Vasudevaya” or reciting Hanuman Chalisa brings peace in the home environment. It is best to use this time to increase your inner strength and remove negativity, so that new energy can enter your life after Holi.
