Umpire Manik Gupta died after being attacked by bees during a KDMA League match in Kanpur. In this tragic accident, other umpires and many players were also seriously injured. This attack lasted for about 10 minutes.
Kanpur: A tragic accident occurred during a match of the KDMA League tournament. The match was going on between YMCC and Paramount at Sapru Ground in Unnao, Kanpur. When the match was at an exciting turn, suddenly a large swarm of bees attacked the field. Kanpur Cricket Association umpire Manik Gupta died in this attack. At the same time, many players were seriously injured and have been admitted to the hospital.
Bees attack umpires
During the league tournament, all the players and umpires were in their respective dresses. Players of both the teams were wearing blue and dark blue colored jerseys. At the same time, the umpires were in white clothes as usual. The bees that came from the Sapru field directly attacked the people present in the field. The bees surrounded both the umpires, Manik Gupta and Jagdish Sharma, as they were dressed in white. Along with this, bees also started attacking the players.
Seeing the umpires surrounded, the players tried to take them to the pavilion by swinging the bat. But the swarm of bees was very large and their attack intensified. 65 year old umpire Manik Gupta lost his life in this attack. Second umpire Jagdish Sharma was also badly injured.
The injured umpire and players were immediately admitted to a private hospital in Shuklaganj, Unnao. Umpire Manik Gupta’s condition was very critical, so he was referred to Lala Lajpat Rai Hospital in Kanpur. From there he was taken to Lakshmipat Singhania Hospital, but by then it was too late and the doctors declared him dead. Manik Gupta was umpiring for Kanpur Cricket Association for the last 30 years. He umpired in many domestic matches including Ranji Trophy.
Lives lost in 10 minute attack
This attack of bees lasted for about 10 minutes, but in such a short time a major accident occurred. Many players have also been seriously injured in this attack. Umpire Jagdish Sharma and some injured players are undergoing treatment in a hospital in Kanpur.
