The Uttar Pradesh government has emphasized on increasing the income of farmers by increasing the agriculture budget 2026-27 by 20%. Farmers are earning lakhs from solar pumps in Varanasi, farm pond scheme in Kanpur and sweet corn cultivation on 90% subsidy in Gorakhpur.
Gorakhpur/Varanasi/Kanpur. The Yogi government of Uttar Pradesh is continuously working towards making farmers not just food providers but partners in the economic progress of the state. The government has made the policy of ‘low cost-high production’ the main cornerstone of farming. New technology, modern farming and government schemes have an important role in this.
Financial assistance is being provided to farmers through budget provisions and various schemes of the state government. Besides, facilities like roads, electricity, irrigation and storage are also improving in rural areas. Since the first term of Yogi government, development of agriculture sector and increasing the income of farmers has been a priority. The government is also showing its commitment by increasing the amount for agriculture in the budget every year.
Varanasi Agricultural Development: 20% increase in Budget 2026-27, irrigation easy with solar pump
In comparison to the previous financial year, about 20 percent more provision has been made for agricultural schemes in the budget of 2026-27. A total budget of ₹10,888 crore has been proposed. In Varanasi district, farming is done in 94,188 hectares area and 3,05,823 farmers are involved in farming here. In the year 2025-26, the target was set to produce 558.067 thousand metric tons of food grains and 29.354 thousand metric tons of oilseeds.
The identity of Kashi is linked to food production. Natural farming is being promoted here. Farmers are being given solar energy based pumps for irrigation under the Solar Pump Scheme. This has reduced the electricity problem and also reduced the cost. A budget provision of Rs 25,500 crore has been made for rural development. Farmers Satish Singh and Ajit Kumar say that irrigation through solar pumps has become cheap and timely, due to which production has increased.
Under the Prime Minister Crop Insurance Scheme, compensation for losses due to natural disasters is also being provided. Farmers are getting relief from schemes like Kisan Pathshala, Prime Minister Kisan Samman Nidhi, seeds and agricultural equipment on subsidy.
Kanpur Farm Pond Scheme: Earning lakhs from fish farming
Devendra Verma, a farmer of Koriyan village of Ghatampur block of Kanpur, is a successful example of ‘Khet Talab Yojana’. He built a pond in a part of his land and started fish farming. Devendra planted fish seeds scientifically and managed water quality and fodder properly. Other crops were also grown on the banks of the pond. Today they are earning Rs 8 to 9 lakh in a season. This income is many times higher than that of traditional crops like wheat and mustard.
Devendra Verma says that there was a risk in the beginning, but confidence increased due to government schemes and guidance from officials. By adopting proper management and modern technology, good income from fish farming is possible. He also advises other farmers to move forward in this direction.
Gorakhpur Sweet Corn Farming: Double income with 90% subsidy
Under the Accelerated Maize Development Program in Brahmapur block of Gorakhpur, farmers got 90 percent subsidy on seeds. Farmers associated with Farmer Producer Organization (FPO) cultivated sweet corn in eight acres. Sweet corn seeds are available in the market for around Rs 3,200 per kg, but due to government subsidy, farmers got it at only 10 percent of the price. Due to this the cost reduced to Rs 8 to 10 thousand per acre.
The crop was ready in about two and a half months and an average production of 40 quintals per acre was obtained. It was sold in the local market at the rate of Rs 30 per kg. Farmers earned an income of Rs 1 to Rs 1.25 lakh per acre. According to FPO director Aaqib Javed, there is a real increase in the income of farmers with the help of the government. This time, a revolving fund of Rs 75 crore has been made for FPOs in the budget, which will further promote agricultural innovation.
