New Delhi: Google has said that its Pixel 9 series will soon allow easier file sharing with Apple devices like iPhones, iPads and Mac computers. The company is adding support that will let files appear as AirDrop transfers when sent from a Pixel device. This is aimed at making sharing between Android and Apple devices less complicated for users. This feature was earlier seen with the Pixel 10 series.
Google has also said that it is focusing on maintaining fast transfer speeds while keeping user data safe. According to the company, the system includes several layers of security to protect shared files from unwanted access. Google is now expanding it to the Pixel 9 lineup, but the Pixel 9a has not been included. The update is expected to reach users in stages, so not everyone will receive it at the same time.
How the new file sharing system will work
The process of sharing files is designed to stay simple. If someone sends a file from a Pixel 9 series device to an Apple device, it will appear like an AirDrop transfer on the Apple side. On Pixel phones, the file transfer will still run through Quick Share, which is Android’s built-in file sharing tool.
For the feature to work properly, both devices must be set to discoverable mode. This means the sending and receiving devices should be visible to each other during the transfer. Once connected, users will be able to send photos, videos, documents and other files between the devices more easily than before.

Pixel 9a users not part of the update yet
There is one exception: the Pixel 9a won’t get this update. Owners of this budget model will have to use older methods, like Bluetooth, to transfer files. Google said it’s aware of this gap and hopes to bring the feature to more devices over time, leaving the door open for future updates.
The update is being rolled out gradually, so not every Pixel 9 user will get it at the same time. But once it’s available, the experience will be very similar to using AirDrop between Apple devices, just on a Pixel phone. Google emphasizes that privacy is a key part of this update. Multi-layered security measures are in place to make sure the content you share stays safe.
