470-km Ala Khutah heritage project to revive Prophet Muhammad’s Hijra route in Saudi Arabia | Details

New Delhi: Saudi Arabia on Sunday evening unveiled the “Ala Khutah” project, which traces the historic 470-kilometer route spanning eleven sites that Prophet Mohammed took from Mecca to Medina. The project, called “In the Prophet’s Steps” in English, “is an experience designed to revive the legacy of this sacred migration, allowing each traveler to reflect, connect, and walk through the spiritual and historical echoes of one of Islam’s most profoundly moments,” according to Ala Khutah’s official website.

An important undertaking

This project is spread over eleven specific places on the migration (Hijra) route. According to the official website, it has been designed to relive the legacy of this holy pilgrimage, allowing travelers to get a historical glimpse into one of Islam’s most significant moments.

The Chief of the Kingdom’s General Entertainment Authority (GEA) Turki Alalshikh shared a clip of the inauguration event on his official X page. “In Madinah, Ala Khutah has been inaugurated as a 470-kilometer heritage initiative tracing the route of the Prophet’s Hijrah. The project documents its historic milestones through a structured educational framework that promotes deeper understanding of the Prophet’s life,” the GEA head said.

The Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported that during the event, Prince Salman bin Sultan bin Abdulaziz, Governor of Medina and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Medina Region Development Authority, also inaugurated the ‘Hijra: In the Footsteps of the Prophet’ exhibition. The head of the General Entertainment Authority, Turki Alalshikh, said the initiative fosters a deeper understanding of the Prophet’s life through a structured educational framework.

The exhibition also offers a modern, immersive experience, with 14 interactive stations designed with inputs from local and international experts. Included in the experience are also 53 artworks, including pieces of historical and Islamic art. Apart from this, there is also a documentary film and virtual reality experience. In which the government has tried to present the story through modern knowledge-based media.

According to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA), the Prophet’s migration lasted eight days and covered a distance of more than 400 kilometers. This journey had a major impact on the social, political and economic environment of the Arabian Peninsula. This project highlights the learnings from the journey in planning, resilience and community-building.
