New Delhi: What began as a Valentine’s Day dinner for a young couple in Haryana ended in a brutal killing that shocked the state. A chartered accountant has been arrested for allegedly murdering his wife just hours after they celebrated the occasion together.
The incident took place in Badadurgarh, where a bank employee Mahak, was found dead at her home late on Saturday night. Her husband, Anshul Dhawan, initially told police that unknown men had tried to rob them and had slit her throat during the attack.
Anshul works in Gurugram, and around 11 pm, he called the police with a robbery claim.
However, investigators soon began to doubt his version of events.
Gaps in robbery story
According to Jhajjar Police, Anshul’s statements were inconsistent from the start. He reportedly failed to give clear details about the alleged attackers and kept changing key parts of his story. Officers grew suspicious as there were no clear signs of forced entry or struggle that matched his claim.
When further questions were asked Anshul eventually broke down and confessed to the crime. Police said he had been harbouring suspicions about his wife’s character for some time which often led to arguments between the couple.
Mahak worked at HDFC Bank in Gurugram while Anshul was a resident of Hisar. The two had married on September 25 last year.
Planned murder, say police
Investigators revealed that Anshul tried to avoid leaving evidence. He allegedly wore gloves during the attack. Police said he first strangled Mahak and then used a pair of scissors to slit her throat.
Mahak’s father, Krishna Kathuria, said he had suspected his son-in-law from the beginning. The police solved the case within 18 hours, turning what first looked like a robbery into a murder investigation.
Anshul has been taken into custody and further legal proceedings are underway. The case has left the local community shaken especially given the crime followed a day meant to celebrate love.
